Which city suites our family best?
My wife and I have been traveling around the U.S. for the last twelve years for work. We have been in the northern Midwest for the last 8. We both just started remote jobs and now want to find a permanent home for our small family (2kids 2dogs).
Both cities seem like they have a lot to offer. We like the vibe of Raleigh a bit better but Charolette offers better resources in terms of airport city access.
Any advice helps, thanks.
Hi there,
It sounds like you’ve got an exciting decision ahead! Both Raleigh and Charlotte are fantastic options, and your family’s priorities will play a big role in determining which city fits best. Here’s a quick breakdown based on what you’ve shared:
Why Raleigh Might Suit You
• Family-Friendly Vibe: Raleigh has a more laid-back, college-town energy with strong emphasis on education and community. It’s part of the Research Triangle, which means great schools, plenty of parks, and a family-oriented culture.
• Outdoor Opportunities: If your family enjoys the outdoors, Raleigh offers easy access to trails, lakes, and state parks like Umstead State Park and Falls Lake.
• Smaller City Feel: Raleigh feels less urbanized than Charlotte but still has plenty of amenities, cultural events, and a growing food scene.
• Cost of Living: Raleigh tends to be slightly more affordable than Charlotte, especially for housing.
Why Charlotte Might Fit Better
• Major City Perks: As a larger city, Charlotte has better access to airports (Charlotte Douglas International is a major hub), a bigger downtown, and more corporate resources.
• Sports and Entertainment: Charlotte is a great city if you’re into pro sports (NFL, NBA) or want a vibrant nightlife and arts scene.
• Economic Opportunity: While you’re both remote now, Charlotte has a stronger presence in banking and finance, which could open doors if career shifts ever come up.
• Proximity to Mountains: If your family loves weekend getaways, Charlotte’s closer proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains is a plus.
Other Factors to Consider
• Schools: Both cities have strong public and private school options, but Raleigh often gets the edge for quality in public education, thanks to its ties to the Research Triangle.
• Traffic: Charlotte’s traffic can be more intense than Raleigh’s, though it depends on where in the city you’d live.
• Community Feel: If you prefer a city that feels a bit more intimate and connected, Raleigh might win out.
It sounds like Raleigh’s vibe has already caught your attention, which could mean it aligns more with your family’s lifestyle. On the other hand, Charlotte’s resources might make life more convenient.
My advice: Visit both cities with your kids and dogs in tow if possible. Explore neighborhoods, parks, and schools, and see which one feels like home. Sometimes, the best choice is the one that feels right when you’re standing in it.
Good luck with the decision, and I’m happy to answer more specific questions if you have them!
